Seminar 2019 Schedule and Programme

17 September, 2019: Seminar on Teaching

Session 1: Teaching Gender Studies
(Presentations by:Guro Kristensen and Ki-young Shin)

Based on presentations about the gender studies curricula at NTNU and Ochanomizu University, participants discussed the challenges they face in their classrooms. Both universities provide undergraduate courses and postgraduate degree programmes in gender studies. The Master’s programme curriculum at NTNU focuses on producing a degree thesis within the required two-year period, while Ochanomizu prefers seminar style teaching. Despite these differences in curriculum structure, professors acknowledged that both universities share the same challenges when teaching the knowledge domain of gender studies.

Session 2: A Pedagogy of Unlearning: Threshold Learning in Gender Studies
(Presentation by Jennifer Branlat)

The process of learning academic concepts can be a transformative experience for students. Such learning experiences are sometimes termed “unlearning” and “threshold learning”. Dr Branlat is conducting interview research with postgraduate students of gender studies about their experience of unlearning. Participants listened to her presentation on her research project and discussed it.

Session 3: Online Education Tool Perusall

Perusall (https://perusall.com) is a text reading platform for university education and NTNU professors utilise it for their class preparation. The possibility of employing Perusall in the educational activities of the INTPART project was discussed.

The outcomes of the student exchange programme in 2019 were presented and the plan for the mobility during the following years was discussed. Making reading lists for students to study gender in Norway and Japan was proposed.

18 September, 2019: Workshop for Research Collaboration and Anthology Publication

Session 1: Anthology Editors Meeting

An outline of an editing policy and publication schedule were discussed.
Editors: Ringrose, Kristensen and Ishii-Kuntz.

Session 2: Guest Lecture by Dr Yukari Semba
‘Abolition of Gamete Donor Anonymity’

The idea of people’s right to know their biological parents has led a worldwide trend to eliminate gamete donor anonymity in third party reproduction. Following a review of the legislative process to eliminate donor anonymity in Australia and New Zealand, a discussion took place about what Japan can learn from these experiences.

Dr Semba was not able to come to NTNU unfortunately, so Ishii-Kuntz delivered the prepared paper on her behalf. Participants included not only NTNU researchers, but also a doctor of reproductive medicine and parents who had conceived children with the assistance of reproductive medicine. During the following discussion, participants’ questions were mainly about the socio-cultural aspects of reproduction and family in Japan, such as public discussions on reproductive medicine in Japan and the Japanese perception of human rights as reflected in social systems and customs.

Session 3: Call for Collaborator Meeting

Researchers interested in collaboration with Japanese researchers were invited and asked to share their research interests and ideas to help identify prospective research proposals.

Session 4: Anthology Project Meeting

The outline of an editing policy drafted at the editors meeting in the morning was presented and the processes and schedule of publication were confirmed.
